PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Lasermate’s Visible Fiber Optic Fault Locator (VFOFL) injects 635nm visible laser light into the fiber. Its universal receptacle accepts any optical connector style with a Æ2.5mm ferrule including SC, ST & FC connectors. The red laser light scatters when the light encounters a break or sharp bend. The scattered light can be observed emerging from the cable. VFOFL can locate breaks in short patchcords, which an OTDR cannot detect during their operating dead zone, typically <10 m. VFOFL is the very important supportive-device for OTDR and much less expansive than an OTDR. With high visibility of 635nm laser light, the length of fiber for testing by VFOFL is up to 3km.

Lasermate’s VFOFL can be operated in either continuous-wave (CW) mode or pulse mode, which is 3 Hz modulation. Pulse mode helps in locating faults under high ambient light conditions and improves battery life. Visible red light with 3 Hz modulation is easily detected by the naked eye.

In addition, VFOFL is useful for optimizing splices. An improperly made splice loses its light at the joint between the two fibers. The splice loss can be seen while the fiber connected to the visible fiber fault locator is pushed, pulled or rotated to reduce the loss. When the escaping visible light is minimized, the splice is optimized.

Moreover, VFOFL is used for checking connector quality. Poor gluing or dirt inside the connector ferrule itself may create a microbend in the fiber. This microbend will produce excess insertion losses or return losses, and may result in premature failure of the connector. One can readily see the distortion as a series rings of light superimposed on a normal output when one injects visible light through the fiber. This ring pattern is the indication of microbend in the fiber caused by the poor quality of connector.
